The design for a landscape park surrounding the headquarters of water authority Rijn en IJssel in Doetinchem in 2008 was a turning point, not only in Nico Wissing’s work but also in the awareness of sustainable design in the Netherlands. The building blends into the landscape, with trees, shrubs, herbaceous and native planting promoting the well-being of employees and visitors. There is room for art, outdoor workplaces, paved seating areas, water and beautifully camouflaged parking spaces. This landscape park is designed according to the cradle 2 cradle principle, which means that the materials used are biodegradable or can be 100% used as raw material for a new product (‘upcycling’).
